We will fondly remember Caterina for her keen eye for the great potential in new television projects, and for finding and encouraging new talent. Her contribution to the sector has been immense.

Caterina began her career with TVNZ in the 1970s, and was the first woman to head a production department. She cut her teeth as a script editor on Play School, went on to produce the ambitious drama Erebus: The Aftermath, and was the foundation producer of Shortland Street. At TV3 she commissioned the acclaimedbro’Town and Outrageous Fortune series. She had a particular flair for producing excellent comedy.

In 2009 she moved to a new position as an executive producer of drama and comedy at Australian public broadcaster SBS.

“Caterina De Nave has directly touched the lives and careers of most actors, directors, writers and fellow producers in the screen industry. She devised, produced, commissioned or was an active cheer leader for some of the best drama and comedy made in New Zealand,” says Jane Wrightson, Chief Executive NZ On Air.

After living with leukaemia for more than 15 years, Caterina died on 17 August 2014 in Sydney.
