NZ On Air guidance on how we will assess funding applications that propose the use of AI or GenAI; Platform round funding decisions; and upcoming Big Screen Symposium.

AI Guidance

NZ On Air has produced guidance on how we will assess funding applications that propose the use of AI or GenAI in the creation of screen and music content.

This guidance is not intended to regulate AI use across the entire industry or to enforce rights management. Those responsibilities fall outside NZ On Air’s role as a funding agency. Instead, our focus is on how AI may be used within the scope of publicly funded content and how it aligns with our values and objectives.

Due to the very fast advancements in AI this guidance is a living document. It will be updated as and when it needs to be. We are all learning as we go.

We hope you have the Big Screen Symposium 2025 in your calendars. Held over Friday 4 July and Saturday 5 July this year in Auckland, it’s a great opportunity to connect with fellow screen practitioners and expand your knowledge.

NZ On Air will be there, with a detailed update to be delivered by CE Cameron Harland and Head of Funding Amie Mills on some recent learnings, a data-laden dive into funding impacts and how we are responding to sector needs. In addition, our Research Advisor Dr Fairooz Samy will have a session dedicated to the second Seen On Screen report, reporting on the diversity of on-screen roles, and the new workforce data project The Everyone Project Aotearoa.
