A Remarkable Place To Die
A Remarkable Place To Die, returning for season 2

A note from the CEO

Tēnā koe

Our final funding round of the 24/25 financial year has concluded, and served as a stark reminder of how fast the year is going. It was also a reminder of how fragile the commercial situation in the media environment is right now.

We are seeing this in two ways in particular. Firstly, we are seeing more content that was previously commercially funded now coming to us for funding. The second is that platform contributions have been quite erratic, and in most cases lower than historical levels.

With regard to previously commercially funded content, the public media funding principles we are driven by continue to apply. That said, content that shows it has a public media heart and also has broad audience appeal is very much what we are looking for. Important considerations for us are fairness and contestability so we can compare apples with apples. So please look out for some guidance in the next funding round information (Round Tahi guidelines) which will be out next week.

With regard to the platform contributions, we have to strike the right balance. Platform contributions help to ensure the platform has ‘skin in the game’ but also help our funds stretch a little further. It is also an expectation of international partners looking to enter into co-productions. However, we are aware of the difficult commercial realities that broadcasters and platforms face. We have undertaken a pragmatic revision of our Platform contribution policy and will be talking to platforms about this over coming weeks. The policy will be published once those engagements have concluded.

In this round we have funded a range of content, which you can read more about below. Our approach with content for rangatahi and tamariki continues to prioritise digital-first content. Comprehensive research into the Children’s audience is shortly to begin, which will update and further develop our thinking in this space. In both the Scripted and Non-fiction areas we are excited by the breadth of content funded, mixing returning favourites with new and ambitious shows.

Finally our content is making headlines, and winning audiences and acclaim both here and overseas. We hope you find the time to enjoy some great local TV, music, podcasts and games over the coming Easter and ANZAC period.

Music Update

NZ On Air Music Showcase

We held our first NZ On Air Music Showcase for 2025 in February in Tāmaki Makaurau, with performances from A.R.T, Ruby Coley, Coast Arcade and NO CIGAR. The performing artists were interviewed as part of our ‘Get To Know’ video series.

Not only was it another successful night of live music, showcasing to the sector some of Aotearoa’s emerging talent, but the 20% Awards were also presented to commercial radio stations that had achieved 20% or more local music airplay in 2024. The below stations were presented their awards by Minister for Media and Communications Hon. Paul Goldsmith.

NiuFM

BayrockFM (Whakatane)

CFM (Coromandel)

Q97 (Whakatane)

Radio Hauraki

1XX (Whakatane)

(The awards are based on data for airplay on commercial radio only and don't include music played on public, student and iwi radio – which all have legislated benchmarks that commercial stations do not. Their data is tracked separately and also shows exceptional local content airplay results.)
