TV Development Funding

NZ On Air development funding is primarily for drama projects (as they are generally the highest cost projects), although other types of programmes will be considered occasionally.

Development funding sometimes results from NZ On Air and broadcaster partnerships targeting particular types of programmes, where they agree some development investment would be beneficial. Previous examples of this have included one-off plays, adult drama series, and comedy projects.

In order for applications to be considered, eight copies of a written proposal (one for each NZ On Air Board member and two for staff), including a development application form , must be provided before the published deadline.

If the application arrives late it may be held over until the next meeting date.

NZ On Air board meetings are held every two months. For a list of dates and deadlines click here . It is usual for the applicants to be contacted by fax within three days following the meeting with details of the decision.

Applications should be made by an experienced producer, and must include the following detail (explain in your covering letter if you cannot provide any specific information):

A clear explanation/synopsis of the programme, characters and storylines.
A detailed description of what the result of the development will be and what will be delivered to NZ On Air.
Key personnel involved in the development, eg: producer, scriptwriter, script editor etc, and their relevant experience.
A full development budget.
A schedule up to final delivery of the development project.
An estimate as to the anticipated total cost of a production based on the development.
An indication of the intended sources of funding for the production.
A written statement of interest in the project from a New Zealand broadcaster, plus details of the broadcaster's financial contribution. Most development proposals should be negotiated to comprise around a 50/50 investment arrangement with NZ On Air and the supporting broadcaster.
