NZ On Air provides funding to The New Zealand Film Archive to archive a wide range of New Zealand television broadcasts and to maintain the collections in line with accepted archiving procedures, including public access to the collections.

The Film Archive Selection and Acquisition Services include:
Acquiring a sample of broadcast television programmes which is likely to be of historical interest in New Zealand from a variety of broadcasters and genres.
Acquiring Contemporary Material by recording directly off-air or seeking deposits directly from the copyright holder.
Acquiring Contemporary Material for the NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection.
Ensuring NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection master material is stored on either one inch open reel tape, Beta Sp cassette or DVCam cassette. The Film Archive must maintain equipment for existing formats for at least fifteen years.
Ensuring controls are in place at The Film Archive to prevent duplication of master material into the NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection especially if some selection and acquisition services are subcontracted to another archive.
Ensuring that Contemporary Material sampled shall include at least 24 hours of continuous broadcasting from major broadcasters (including TV One, TV2, TV3, TV4, Prime, Sky TV) with originating transmission from New Zealand each year.
Ensuring that untransmitted material of historical interest shall be archived by The Film Archive in exceptional circumstances only as determined by The Film Archive.

Ensuring that NZ On Air-Funded Historical Material master is preserved onto either film, one inch open reel tape, Beta Sp cassette or DVCam cassette. The Film Archive must maintain equipment for existing formats for at least fifteen years.
Protecting the NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection Material master against loss and degradation.
Ensuring that the NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection Material master is stored under internationally agreed conditions as required by FIAF/FIAT in secure vaults.

The NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection shall be entered into The Film Archive's catalogue system in accordance with international archival standards adopted by FIAF/FIAT. The catalogue system must be available for public access.
Being responsible for handling all public access enquiries for the NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection.
Ensuring that access copies of all NZ On Air-Funded Archive Collection's Contemporary, and Historical Material masters are created. Access material will be recorded onto consumer video format such as VHS. The Film Archive must maintain equipment for access material for at least fifteen years.
Ensuring that where necessary documentation which supports the NZ On Air-Funded Collection will be collected by The Film Archive.
