Hillary is the first drama production to explore the life of Sir Edmund Hillary and those closest to him.
Best known as the first man to conquer Mount Everest, there is much more to Sir Edmund Hillary’s 88 years of life than the events of May 29, 1953. Told over six hour-long episodes, this series doesn’t just cover Sir Ed’s greatest achievements, but his full personal and inspiring life story. Hillary explores the challenges of his life along with the triumphs. From a lonely childhood, finding love and then the loss of a wife and child, there is far more to Sir Ed’s story than conquering Mount Everest.
Writer and Executive Producer Tom Scott is a long-time friend of Sir Edmund and is the creator of the 2008 documentary Remembering Ed. In creating Hillary, Tom Scott has drawn on hundreds of hours of interviews with his friend.
The creative team at Great Southern Television have chosen an outstanding local cast including experienced actor Andrew Munro who plays the important role of Sir Ed and Dean O’Gorman who plays George Lowe – Ed’s lifelong climbing companion.
This series builds on New Zealanders’ knowledge of what is already a significant part of our culture and history.

But for me the most rewarding moments have not always been the great moments, for what can surpass a tear on your departure, joy on your return, and a trusting hand in yours?— Sir Edmund Hillary
