New Zealand music heavyweight Dave Dobbyn embarks on a journey to create a song in memory of the 29 miners who tragically lost their lives at Pike River.
On 19 November 2010, twenty-nine miners lost their lives in an explosion in the Pike River mine near Greymouth. Their bodies remain entombed inside the mine.
Dreams Lie Deeper is a one-off documentary in which kiwi musician Dave Dobbyn travels to Greymouth to meet the families of the 29 men killed in the mine disaster, gathering inspiration to write a tribute song. The one-hour programme will also include a live performance of the song, recorded in Wellington's Michael Fowler Centre earlier this year. Dave Dobbyn was supported by Wellington-based Orpheus Choir, which commissioned him to compose the piece.
Dreams Lie Deeper explores the emotional and creative challenge Dave Dobbyn experiences to create a piece that not only honours the lives of the 29 Pike River miners, but miners who risk their lives every day all over the world.
The epic and moving 8-minute tribute This Love was released in May 2014 and can be listened to on SoundCloud.

I wanted to memorialise the 29 men and to give hope to the families. They've had enough grief.— Dave Dobbyn
