Most of the funding that NZ On Air provides for radio goes towards maintaining certain non-commercial public radio services - like National Radio and Concert FM, access radio, Pacific Island radio.
But over the last few years, NZ On Air has opened lines of funding for certain kinds of radio programmes that are carried by other radio stations.
At the moment, the radio programme funding priorities are as follows:
These priorities are based on the priorities identified in the Broadcasting Act 1989 which governs NZ On Air's work.
For example, Section 37(d) of the Act encourages NZ On Air to promote the broadcasting of New Zealand music and radio drama and Section 36(c) of the Act encourages NZ On Air to give special attention to youth and programmes that reflect "the diverse religious and ethical beliefs of New Zealanders" .

NZ On Air funds radio programmmes for, by and about youth. At the moment they include Upload, which plays on a variety of commercial radio stations around New Zealand, and Te Puutake on Iwi, Access and Student radio stations.
In addition to those youth-based radio shows, NZ On Air funds That's The Story, a programme of original New Zealand stories, broadcast on Sunday mornings on the Classic Hits FM network.
Funding is also directed to programmes with an ethical and spiritual flavour, for example, the values-based show, Scrubcutter.
And on a number of iwi and access radio stations around the country, you can hear the NZ On Air-funded English-language Māori issues programme, Paakiwaha, while the Radio Live network broadcasts a NZ On Air-funded programme that details the workings of Parliament - Parliament Today.
Our funding of radio shows that promote and profile New Zealand music is dealt within the NZ Music section of the web site - see Music Radio Programmes.
