Pacific Island Radio

NZ On Air currently funds two dedicated Pacific Island community radio stations - the pan-Pacific Island radio station Radio 531pi in Auckland and Samoa Capital Radio in Wellington.

We fund these two radio stations in line with a long-standing policy to support dedicated Pacific Island radio services in areas of greatest Pacific Island population.

That's on top of what the NZ On Air-funded access radio stations do for Pacific Island audiences around the country.

At last count, about 22% of access radio hours are dedicated to programming for Pacific Island communities.

Radio 531pi

Radio 531pi is a 24-hour a day Pacific Island community radio station run by the Auckland Pacific Island Community Radio Trust.

Radio 531pi has been on air since 1993. It broadcasts in a mix of Pacific Island languages and English, catering for the eight main Pacific Island ethnic groups living in the world's biggest Pacific Island city.

You can hear Radio 531pi on 531kHz (on the AM band) in Auckland and as far south as Hamilton.

Si'ufofoga ole Laumua - Samoa Capital Radio

Samoa Capital Radio is based in Wellington. Samoa Capital Radio shares transmission facilities with Wellington Access Radio but it is an independent operation.

Samoa Capital Radio broadcasts for 38 hours a week - predominantly in the Samoan language - a mix of education, health, welfare and employment information and discussion, sports, Samoan culture, religious devotion and, of course, plenty of Samoan music.

You can hear Samoa Capital Radio on 783kHz (on the AM band) in Wellington and much of the lower North Island and top of the South Island.
