Other Radio

New Zealand is one of the most "radio-ed" countries in the world. In 1988 - before deregulation - there were about 40 radio stations in the country. Today, there are more than 200.

NZ On Air funds some radio services - mostly, non-commercial public radio services like National Radio and Concert FM; access radio; Pacific Island radio stations.

And some other radio services are publicly-funded - like Māori radio stations that are funded by our sister agency Te Māngai Pāho .

But most of the radio stations in the country are independent and are privately-funded (like the Christian radio network, Radio Rhema) or commercially-funded.

One of the best radio web site portals is maintained by the radio industry trade journal Median Strip .

The Median Strip site will take you to the sites of most of the major commercial players:

The Median Strip site Links page is very helpful as well. Here you will find links to the licensing and broadcasting standards authorities.
