There’s a world of contrast within the documentary projects to win NZ On Air support in the final funding round of the year. In total NZ On Air has committed $41.6 million to Factual content this year.
Slow brings the slow TV phenomena to NZ audiences on Prime; an innovative way for viewers to journey through our landscapes and history.
Meanwhile Kaikoura: A Big Year is a journey of a different sort. The TVNZ 1 Sunday documentary brings together a year’s worth of footage of the work to rebuild the earthquake shattered roads in and out of the coastal town.
Renee’s Brain is an emotional and inspiring documentary for Prime in which a young woman seeks medical release from Tourette’s syndrome, while a prime time documentary on Three will explore the impact of addiction.
Other topics covered include racism, hiphop dance, a woman’s experiences with the Iranian Qashqai culture, kiwi soldiers’ role in the battle of Le Quesnoy, and youth musical talents.
“We’ve capped off the first year of public media funding under the new platform-neutral NZ Media Fund with an incredible array of diversity – of content type, of topics and of audiences served. This is precisely what we hoped to achieve with our new approach,” says NZ On Air Chief Executive Jane Wrightson.
Following the latest funding round, audiences will be able to enjoy audio visual public media on 26 platforms, in addition to numerous radio stations up and down the country.

Dreaming, 1 x 44 mins, Notable Pictures for Three, up to $204,586 Exploring the impact of addiction on a life, career and family.
The Centenary Of The Battle Of Le Quesnoy, 6 x 4 mins + 5 x 2 mins, Homegrown Television for NZ Herald online, up to $113,156 Short clips and podcasts telling the story of NZ men who freed an occupied French town in WWI.
Renee’s Brain, 1 x 42 mins, 2B Media for Prime, up to $110,000 Renee, severely afflicted by Tourette’s syndrome embarks on treatment that could save her life.
