NZ On Air funding contributes to a range of programmes screened on TV One, TV2, TV3, C4, Prime and Maori Television.
Television Funding
NZ On Air has been responsible for major television achievements such as:
- the development of two successful documentary strands, Inside NZ on TV3, and Documentary NZ on TV One;
- a range of in-depth documentaries, such as The New Zealand Wars, Captain's Log, 2050 What If?, Punitive Damage, Marti and Hillary: A View from the Top;
- popular drama and comedy, such as Outrageous Fortune and bro'Town;
- a strategy to bring Māori programming into primetime, for example through the documentary strands;
- popular children's programmes; and
- funding more than 15,000 hours of locally produced television.
NZ On Air closely monitors broadcasting developments, in particular, the transition to digital transmission. This will certainly affect television and may also be relevant to radio.
Currently however NZ On Air's television funding is focussed primarily on the major free to air networks, accessible to the widest New Zealand audience. This is in line with our statutory obligation to have regard to the potential size of the audience to benefit from a programme made with NZ On Air funding.
