Access and Community Radio

NZ On Air funds a variety of community radio services - access radio stations; Pacific Island community radio services; and a radio reading service for the print disabled.

Visit the Radio Reading Service website.

In this section, we deal specifically with access radio - what it is; where it is; how the funding works.

Access radio is radio for the people by the people. Access radio gives community groups the chance to make and broadcast their own programmes.

There are 11 access radio stations broadcasting in New Zealand at present:

You will find a link above to an access radio map of the country and a link to access radio contact details if you want to contact any one of the stations.

Finally, if you want to find out more about access radio in New Zealand, check out the ACAB web site. ACAB is the Association of Community Access Broadcasters and is the access radio stations' national body.

Access Radio Funding Guidelines

These guidelines give the context for NZ On Air's support for access radio - in other words, why we fund access radio - and the criteria that we use to fund access radio - in other words, how we fund access radio.

Hallmarks of Access Radio

What is access radio? What distinguishes access radio from other local and community radio services?

These are common questions and in response, we have drawn up a (not necessarily exclusive) list of the characteristics of access radio, the features that make access radio different.
