We target funding to niche audiences rarely served by national television and radio. We invest around $7.5 million annually in regional, ethnic and special interest content. For background information on our strategy, read these consultation papers.

Access Radio

Access radio stations enable groups to produce and broadcast programmes for their own regions and communities. We fund eleven very different Access radio stations. The amount of funding to each station is based on tiers that reflect the size of the potential audience. These are:

Tier 1

Large
Metro

Planet FM Auckland.

Tier 2

 Large Urban

Community Radio Hamilton,
Wellington Access, 
Plains FM Christchurch.

 

Tier 3

 Provincial City

Access Radio Taranaki,
Access Manawatu,
Radio Kidnappers Hawke's Bay,
Fresh FM Nelson,
Radio Southland,
Otago Access Radio Dunedin.

Tier 4

Small Regional

Arrow FM Masterton,
Coast Access Kapiti.

Other Stations

Pacific radio stations

We fund three dedicated Pacific radio stations - Niu FM in Auckland and nationwide, 531pi in Auckland and Samoa Capital Radio in Wellington.

Special Interest stations

We fund the Radio Reading Service in Levin.

The Māori broadcasting funding agency Te Māngai Pāho funds the 21 Māori radio stations across the country.

Regional Television

We fund special programmes to screen on eligible regional channels. Our current priorities are local news and information programmes.
